Amarillo
is located in the north-central portion of the Texas Panhandle. It's the 14th most populous city, with a population of 190,695 in 2010. Once known as the Llano Estacado Region (meaning staked plain,) the Texas Panhandle is open-range cattle country, mostly covered by tall buffalo grass. It was, and still is, a weather-beaten, raw Old West region. In 1877, what is now Amarillo was called Ragtown, and was later renamed Amarillo, which is Spanish for "yellow." Today, the city is the regional economic center for the Texas Panhandle. Things to see and do in the city include lots of events and attractions honoring the cowboy and Old West Texas culture. The Tri-State Fair & Rodeo has been a tradition since 1921, and other events include the World Championship Chuckwagon Roundup, held the first weekend in June, and the World Championship Ranch Rodeo. The Amarillo National Center is a venue that hosts equestrian competitions, rodeos and motor sports. The Amarillo Museum of Art features a range of art from 20th century American art to Southeast Asian treasures. The Carson County Square House Museum depicts the history and development of the Texas Panhandle and includes a historic house, furnished dugout dwelling, a Santa Fe caboose, barn and more. The Don Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo has exhibits that focus on science, health and technology with over 75 hands-on exhibits. This is just a small sample of what Amarillo has to offer; there's also historic homes and buildings, over 50 city parks, gardens and more.

The North-Central Panhandle of Texas is also known as the Panhandle Plains or Northern Plains. The climate is semi-arid or Continental Steppe. It's prone to drought and receives annually between 16 to 32 inches of precipitation. Summers are hot with clear skies. This climate is typical of interiors of continents and is characterized by large variations in the daily temperature extremes, low relative humidity, and irregularly spaced rainfall of moderate amounts. Winters are mild, although most winter nights, the temperature falls below the freezing mark. Being farthest from the Gulf of Mexico, this region is the coldest in the state. Tornadoes are very common, caused by the convergence of westerly and southerly prevailing winds, especially during late spring. Dust storms are also a possibility.
