Crockett
is a small city that is the county seat of Houston County in east-central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,141. The town was named for David "Davy" Crockett, a 19th-century American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier and politician. He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives, served in the Texas Revolution, and died at the Battle of the Alamo. It is reported that he camped near what is now the town of Crockett on his way to the Alamo. There are several historical attractions in the town of Crockett, including the Downs-Aldrich House (circa 1890s) and the Monroe-Crook House (circa 1854.) The Piney Woods Fine Arts Association in Crockett offers musical performances and theatrical plays. For outdoor recreation, Houston County Lake is about ten miles northwest of town and offers swimming, fishing and camping. Mission Tejas State Park is 21 miles northeast of Crockett. This park is the site of Texas first Spanish mission. Things to do at Mission Tejas Park include picnicking, hiking, fishing and camping. The park is filled beautiful dogwood tree that are usually in full bloom the last week or so of March. Caddo Mounds State Historic Park is also near Crockett. These earthen mounds are more than 1,200 years old. There is also an interpretive center with numerous artifacts on the grounds.

East-central Texas ,on the border of the upper Gulf Coast Region and Southern Lakes Region, the climate is mostly humid subtropical. Summers are hot and humid, and inters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, east-central Texas receives 33 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in the springtime. Tornadoes are a threat, especially in the springtime. Bright sunshine prevails most of the time. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
