Freeport
is located in Brazoria County in southeast Texas. It's part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Freeport was 12,049 people. Freeport was founded in 1912 with a population of only 300, but had grown to 3,500 by 1929 - and it just kept on growing! The Dow Chemical Company built their facility in Freeport in 1939, which contributed to the growth of the town, and it still plays a major role in the economy of the community today. In 2003, the city annexed nearby Bryan Beach. A visit from former First Lady, Laura Bush, in 2000 launched an initiative in Freeport for The Main Street Program, which is a subprogram of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Freeport was subsequently recognized as a National Main Street City in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Things to do in the town include fishing and boating, being only minutes from the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. You can also fish from the shore, go jet skiing or water skiing on the Old Brazos River, or camp on the beach. A round of golf is also available at the Freeport Municipal Golf Course.

Freeport Weather & Climate

The Southeast Coast of Texas has a subtropical humid climate. The coastal areas are warm most of the year due to currents of the Gulf of Mexico. It can get cold in winter if a strong front arrives - sometimes even causing snow at sea level. Summers are hot and humid. Rain in the coastal region is more abundant than in the inland region, and subtropical forests line the Rio Grande River. The wettest months of the year are April and May. Inland, it's drier, and ranches dominate the landscape, characterized by thick spiny brush and grasslands. Southwest Texas' position at the northwestern end of the Gulf of Mexico makes it vulnerable to hurricanes. Some of the most destructive hurricanes in history have impacted Texas, most recently Hurricane Rita in 2005, and Hurricane Ike in 2008.
