Galveston
is a city on the southern coast of Texas, located on Galveston Island and Pelican Island. As of the 2010 census, the population was 47,762 residents. Galveston, which became a major U.S. port and commercial center during the 19th century, is home to six historic districts. It's one of the largest and most historically significant collections of 19th-century buildings in the U.S., listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Galveston Island is about 45 miles southeast of downtown Houston. A deepwater channel connects Galveston harbor with the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. There are dozens of things to do in Galveston. The top attraction is the beach and all the beach activities such as swimming, sunning, surfing, fishing, shelling and more. The island also offers golf, birding, hiking, and biking. The Galveston seawall is over ten miles long - the world's "longest continuous sidewalk" large enough for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, skaters and sightseers. Probably the second top attraction in Galveston is the 242-acre Moody Gardens, which is called "part theme park, part pleasure garden and part educational and rehabilitation facility. This lush environment contains tropical plants and three glass pyramids that house a 10-story rainforest, one of the world's largest aquariums, and an educational Discovery Museum. The complex also includes IMAX theaters, a beach, freshwater lagoon, a 19th century-style paddle wheeler, a Vietnam Veterans Memorial and a luxury hotel. Museums are abundant in Galveston and other attractions include the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, historic home tours, shopping, a huge waterpark, and fine dining.

The Central Southeast coast of Texas has a humid subtropical climate according to the Koppen climate classification system. Prevailing winds from the south and southeast bring both heat from the deserts of Mexico and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Summer temperatures are very hot and the humidity drives the heat index even higher. Winters are temperate with January highs generally above 60 °F and lows near 50 °F. Snowfall is rare. Average annual rainfall is well over 40 inches a year. Hurricanes and tropical storms are an ever-present threat during the summer and fall season. Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula are generally at the greatest risk for hurricanes in this region.
