Harlingen
is a city located in the Rio Grande Valley in the southern tip of Texas. It's only about 30 miles from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population of Harlingen was 64,849 residents. Harlingen is situated at a strategic location at the intersection of U.S. Route 77 and U.S. Route 83. In 1904, a Mr. Lon C. Hill founded the town on the north bank of the Arroyo Colorado and named it Harlingen, after a city in the Netherlands. At first, the local economy was supported by agriculture, with vegetables and cotton being the major crops. Between 1950 and 1960, the population of Harlingen jumped from 23,000 to 41,000 due to the installation of Harlingen Army Air Field, and later Harlingen Air Force Base, which closed in 1962. By the late 1980s, tourism and citrus fruit production were the major industries in town. Harlingen offers a variety of unique shops and galleries that feature hand-made jewelry, gifts, antiques and Mexican art and crafts. Harlingen is also home to the Rio Grande Valley White Wings, a United Baseball League Minor League Team, and Valley Race Park, a racetrack for Greyhound dogs. Harlingen's Hugh Ramsey Nature Park contains a World Birding Center and extensive hiking/walking trails. Work is underway on a large visitors' center in the park that will feature a gift shop, observation tower and meeting rooms.

The southern tip of Texas has a semi-arid climate. This region is the southernmost tip of the American Great Plains Region. Subtropical forests line the Rio Grande River, and ranches dominate the landscape inland. Summers are generally hot and dry but at times can be humid if winds come off the warmer Gulf of Mexico. Rain is more abundant in the coastal regions than inland. Occasionally in winter a strong front can come through, bringing light snow at sea level. The winters in the inland region are cold and dry as Arctic sweeps downward. Snow is a rare occurrence due to the lack of humidity in winter. Tornadoes can occur in this region, but less frequent than in other parts of the state.
