Houston
is the largest city in the state of Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2.1 million people. The entire metropolitan area has a population of over six million. Houston is a global, diverse city. The metropolitan area is home to an estimated 1.1 million residents who were born outside the United States, with nearly two-thirds from Mexico. The city is a leader in the energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, transportation, health care and oilfield equipment sectors. No other place in the U.S., except New York City, is home to more Fortune 500 headquarters. Houston has also become quite a tourist attraction, home to many museums, festivals, five-star restaurants and upscale shopping. More than seven million visitors per year visit Houston's Museum District, and the city has an active performing arts scene in the theater district. A few of the museums include the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston, and the Holocaust Museum. The largest and longest-running annual livestock show and rodeo is held in Houston over 20 days from late February to early March. Other special events in the city include the annual Houston Pride Parade, the Houston Greek Festival, the Houston Auto Show, and the Bayou City Art Festival, which is one of the top five art festivals in the United States. Houston is also home to a Chinatown district and the Mahatma Gandhi District, and over 300 city parks. Hermann Park includes the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Of the ten largest U.S. cities, Houston has the most total area of parks and green space. The city of Houston is also nicknamed "Space City" because it's the location of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

Southeastern Texas climate is classified as humid subtropical. Summer are very hot. An average of 99 days per year reach above 90 degrees F. High humidity causes the heat index to rise even higher. Winds are often light in the summer and offer little relief from the heat. This region is often called "the most air-conditioned place on earth." Spring super cell thunderstorms sometimes bring tornadoes to the area, although it's not officially part of "Tornado Alley." Winters in southeastern Texas are mild. Snowfall is rare. The average high in January, which is the coldest month, is 63 degrees F. Average annual rainfall in this area is 50 inches. Storms dump large amounts of rain causing flash floods. Prevailing winds are from the south and southeast during most of the year, bringing heat from the deserts.

The closest airports in the area are the William P Hobby airport (HOU) located about 10 miles southeast of Houston, the George Bush Intcntl Houston airport (IAH) located approximately 15 miles north of Houston, Ellington Field (EFD) located roughly 17 miles southeast of Houston, and finally the Sugar Land Regional airport (SGR) located around 19 miles southwest of Houston.
