Lake-Travis
is a reservoir in central Texas that is part of the seven reservoirs known collectively as the Highland Lakes. Lake Travis is probably the most visited of the Highland Lakes due to its' proximity to the city of Austin. The other lakes included in the group are Lake Buchanan, Inks Lake, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake. Lake Travis was formed in 1942 by the construction of Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River and on the western edge of Austin. It has the largest storage capacity of the seven Highland Lakes, and curves 65 miles upriver from western Travis County into southern Burnet County to Max Starcke Dam, southwest of the town of Marble Falls. Lake Travis is used for flood control, water supply, electrical power generation and recreation. It's very popular for boating, fishing, swimming and scuba diving. Fish present in the lake include largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, catfish and sunfish. Other activities at the lake include camping, picnicking, hiking and zip lining. Nude bathing and swimming is permitted at Hippie Hollow Park near the eastern end of Lake Travis. It's the only clothing optional park in the state of Texas. You'll also find plenty of lakeside restaurants at Lake Travis, and activities for children, also. Lake Travis is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Texas.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid, with prevailing winds from the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, central Texas receives 33.6 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in the springtime. Bright sunshine prevails, however, most of the time, with the area receiving nearly 2,650 hours of sun per year. The highest recorded temperature in central Texas was 112 F. on September 5, 2000. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
