Possum-Kingdom-Lake
is a reservoir situated on the Brazos River in north-central Texas. It's about 90 miles northwest of Fort Worth, where the Brazos River cuts through the Palo Pinto Hills. Called "The Great Lake of Texas," Possum Kingdom Lake is known for its' beauty and recreational opportunities. The lake is approximately 17,000 acres with 310 miles of shoreline. Close to one million visitors come to Possum Kingdom Lake each year. There is also a small unincorporated community called Possum Kingdom, but no numbers are available for the population. Towering cliffs surround the lake, with Hell's Gate being the most well-known landmark, located at the south end of the lake. Things to do at Possum Kingdom Lake include boating, fishing, and other water sports, hiking, picnicking and camping. It's a great place for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The lake was originally created from the Morris Sheppard Dam and begun in 1938 and completed in 1941. At completion, engineers estimated the lake would need several years to reach full level. What a surprise when within a few days, heavy rains up river caused the lake to fill within 24 hours.

North Texas , in the Prairie and Plains Region, the climate is semi-arid and prone to drought. Annual rainfall is between 16 and 32 inches. This area of state sees the most sunny days throughout the year. On most winter nights, temperatures fall below the freezing mark, but is never frigid. The wettest months of the year are April and May. Tornadoes are common, caused by the convergence of westerly and southerly prevailing winds during the late spring. Poor land management, drought, and high wind speeds may cause large dust storms. Improved land-management practices have improved dust storms somewhat in recent years.
