Willis
is a small town located in Montgomery County in southeast Texas near Lake Conroe. The city of Conroe is eight miles south of Willis. The town of Willis began as a railroad town and farming community. Tobacco was the main industry, with other crops being cotton, watermelons and tomatoes. The timber industry is vital to the town's economy today, and Willis is considered the gateway to Lake Conroe. Interstate 45 bisects the community, the George Bush Intercontinental Airport is 35 miles south and the Montgomery County Airport is 10 miles east of Willis. Beautiful Lake Conroe is approximately 21 miles long, with 5,000 acres within the Sam Houston National Forest. It was created in the 1970s as a water supply for the city of Houston, but has also become a popular recreational lake. Lots of outdoor activities are available at Lake Conroe and Sam Houston National Forest, including fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, camping, horseback riding, golf, birding and more. The nearby town of Conroe offers two historic theaters, and an outdoor amphitheater with free concerts April through September. The city of Houston is just 40 miles away, making Willis and Lake Conroe the perfect weekend getaway for city dwellers.

Southwest Texas has a humid subtropical climate with very hot summers. An average of 99 days per year reach above 90 degrees F. High humidity causes the heat index to rise even higher. Winds are often light in the summer and offer little relief from the heat. This region is often called "the most air-conditioned place on earth." Spring super cell thunderstorms sometimes bring tornadoes to the area, although it's not officially part of "Tornado Alley." Winters in southeastern Texas are mild. Snowfall is rare. The average high in January, which is the coldest month, is 63 degrees F. Average annual rainfall in this area is 50 inches. Storms dump large amounts of rain causing flash floods. Prevailing winds are from the south and southeast during most of the year, bringing heat from the deserts.
