Baffin-Bay
is a bay, or inlet, of the Laguna Madre, located off the shore of South Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. Baffin Bay is also known as Salt Lagoon and as Lago de la Santisima Trinidad. The bay forms part of the eastern boundary between Kenedy and Kleberg counties. Laguna Madre is a long, shallow lagoon along the eastern coast of Texas in Nueces, Kenedy, Kleberg, Willacy and Cameron Counties. Laguna Madre separates mainland Texas from Padre Island. The lagoon itself is separated by the approximately 20-mile long Saltillo Flats land bridge into Upper and Lower Laguna Madre lagoons. The two are joined by the Intracoastal Waterway. Laguna Madre is about 130 miles long. Baffin Bay and the Laguna Madre's ecosystem is protected by the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, the Padre Island National Seashore, and the privately owned King Ranch. The communities of Port Isabel and Port Mansfield are located on the lagoon's shores. Baffin Bay is near the mainland towns of Kingsville, Loyola and Riviera, and near the resort town of South Padre Island (on the barrier island of the same name.) Fishing is very popular in Baffin Bay, which is home to the last two state trout records. Other activities include hunting, boating and other water sports, birding and hiking. Nearby Kingsville has a designated historical district, unique shops and restaurants for visitors.

The Southeast Gulf Coast of Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Tropical storms and hurricanes are common, and they strongly alter the climate of the region. This region is warm most of the year due to the currents of the Gulf of Mexico. Summers are very hot and humid. In winter, it can get cold if a strong front moves in, occasionally even causing snow. Most of the time, however, winters are very mild. Rain in the coastal region is more abundant than in the inland region. The wettest months of the year are April and May. Tornadoes can occur in this region, but less frequent than in other parts of the state.
