North-Padre-Island is a barrier island located off the coast of southeast Texas. It's also sometimes referred to as simply "Padre Island," and is the largest of the barrier islands that belong to the state of Texas. The whole island is about 113 miles long and stretches from the city of Corpus Christi in the north to the resort town of South Padre Island on the southern end of the island. The island is oriented north-south, with the Gulf of Mexico to the east and the Laguna Madre to the west. A roadway on the northern end connects North Padre Island to Mustang Island. To the south, the island is separated from Brazos Island by the Brazos Santiago Pass. The terms North Padre Island and South Padre Island were started after the creation of the Port Mansfield Channel, which split Padre Island in half. As a whole, the island is sparsely populated, but the town of South Padre Island has a population of 2,816. It's accessible via a causeway from the town of Port Isabel on the mainland. The island is known for its' lovely sugar-soft, white sand beaches. Activities include fishing, boating, jet skiing, kiteboarding, swimming, birding or horseback riding on the beach. The city of South Padre Island offers restaurants, shopping and nightlife. It the springtime, it's a popular spring break destination for college students. The central portion of the island contains Padre Island National Seashore, which aims to preserve Padre Island in its' natural state. Therefore, much of the island is wilderness. It's a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers. Padre Island National Seashore is also one of the few places in the world that's home to Kemp's Ridley sea turtles. They're the smallest and most endangered sea turtles in the world.

North Padre Island Weather & Climate

The Southern Gulf Coast of Texas , in the Padre Island Region, experiences a humid subtropical climate, bordering on a tropical savanna climate. This region receives less precipitation and slightly higher summer temperatures and humidity than some areas in south Florida, except Miami. The southern Gulf Coast also experiences higher relative humidity from June through September in summer than other areas of the state. Southwest Texas' position at the northwestern end of the Gulf of Mexico makes it vulnerable to hurricanes. Some of the most destructive hurricanes in history have impacted Texas, most recently Hurricane Rita in 2005, and Hurricane Ike in 2008. There is usually plenty of warning time given for these types of storms.
