Dallas
is the third most populous city in the state of Texas, and the ninth largest in the United States. It's often associated with neighboring Fort Worth, and together they make up the largest metropolitan area in the Southern U.S. As of the 2010 census, the population of Dallas was 1,197,816. The city of Dallas was founded in 1841 as a center of the oil and cotton industries. Today, it has a strong industrial and financial sector, and is home to the third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the nation. It has the largest inland port in the south, and one of the busiest airports in the world. Dallas is known for its' restaurants; southern barbecue, outstanding steakhouses, authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. The northern section of downtown is home to The Arts District, which includes the Dallas Museum of Art, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Children's Theater. The city also has a Center for the Performing Arts that houses the Dallas Opera, Texas Ballet Theater, the Dallas Black Dance Theater and much more. The city is also known for its' four major sports teams; the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars. The city is host to many special events through the year, but the most notable is the Texas State Fair, which has been held in the city since 1886. For outdoor recreation, the city of Dallas maintains 406 parks equaling 21,000 acres. The city is home to Texas first and largest zoo, which opened at its current location in 1888. Seventeen lakes are contained within the parks, and things to do include fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, golf, biking, tennis, picnicking, birding, camping and so much more.

Northeast Texas has a humid, subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Warm, dry winds from the north and west cause summer temperatures to soar over 100 degrees F. This is one of the hottest regions of the U.S. during the summer. Winters are generally mild with clear, sunny skies. Sometimes, strong cold fronts in winter known as "Blue Northers" will pass through the region, causing nighttime lows to drop below 25 degrees F. It generally snows 1 or 2 days per year, with an average accumulation of 1.8 inches. However, daytime highs around 70 are not uncommon in winter. Spring weather is warm but can be volatile. Severe thunderstorms are common, along with lightening, heavy rain, hail and possible tornadoes. Northeast Texas is located in the heart of Tornado Alley.
