Jefferson
is a historic city located in northeastern Texas in Marion County. The population is around 2,000 residents. Called the "Riverport to the Southwest," Jefferson sits between Caddo Lake and Lake O' the Pines. Almost every house and commercial building on the main road through town has a historical marker. Jefferson dates to a time when steamboats traveled the Big Cypress River from the Port of New Orleans, and the city's rich heritage is still seen and felt today. Attractions in Jefferson include Jay Gould's Railroad Car, the Sterne Fountain, the Jefferson Carnegie Library, the Excelsior House, and the many bayous located in and around the city. Jefferson is a very walkable town; one can walk to the restaurants, coffee shops, museums, antique shops, parks, etc. You can take a riverboat ride along the river, travel on a 19th century steam-driven train, relax in a horse-drawn surrey, or explore the shops and museums on foot. At the end of the day, retire to a historic bed and breakfast inn. The city of Jefferson is well-known around the state as the "Bed and Breakfast Capital of Texas." Many say that Jefferson is "a town that time forgot." Nearby, Caddo Lake is a water garden with cypress trees, Spanish moss, bayous, lotuses and water lilies. Day and night tours of it are available. Lake O' the Pines is a lake that offers sailing, boating, fishing, water-skiing, camping, and hiking. Homes, marinas and restaurants line the shores of Lake O' the Pines.

The Northeast Region of Texas has a humid, subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Warm, dry winds from the north and west cause summer temperatures to soar over 100 degrees F. This is one of the hottest regions of the U.S. during the summer. Winters are generally mild with clear, sunny skies. Sometimes, strong cold fronts in winter known as "Blue Northers" will pass through the region, causing nighttime lows to drop below 25 degrees F. It generally snows 1 or 2 days per year, with an average accumulation of 1.8 inches. However, daytime highs around 70 are not uncommon in winter. Spring weather is warm but can be volatile. Severe thunderstorms are common, along with lightening, heavy rain, hail and possible tornadoes. Northeast Texas is located in the heart of Tornado Alley.
