Lake-Sam-Rayburn is a large reservoir located in southeast Texas, about 70 miles north of the city of Beaumont. It was formerly known as McGee Bend Dam and Reservoir. It's the largest lake in Texas that is located wholly within the state. Lake Sam Rayburn is fed by the Angelina River, which is the major tributary of the Neches River. Lake Sam Rayburn is 114,400 acres, has a maximum depth of 80 feet and almost 750 miles of shoreline. The main purpose of the lake is for flood control and hydroelectric power, but it's also a popular recreational lake. Situated within the East Texas Piney Woods, Lake Sam Rayburn offers some of the best fishing found in Texas. The most popular fish in lake is the largemouth bass, and more than 300 tournaments are held here each year. Excellent year-round crappie and catfish are also present, and bluegill and redear sunfish are also present in high numbers. White bass numbers are limited, but provide good fishing opportunities during the spring. Other things to do at the lake include boating, picnicking, swimming, water-skiing, wakeboarding, birding, hiking and camping. All different types of lodging around the lake is available, including cabins, motels, RV parks, bed and breakfast inns and lake vacation home rentals. You can also take a scenic drive around the lake and visit any number of historic towns around the area.
