Leakey
is a small town located in scenic Real County in south-central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 425 residents. The town is named for pioneer John H. Leakey who came from Tennessee and was one of the first settlers in the area. Leakey's economy depends heavily on tourism due to the proximity to the Frio River and Garner State Park. The town is nestled in a hilly area of the state, sometimes called "The Swiss Alps of Texas." Elevations range from 1,500 to 2,400 feet. Deep canyons in the region are cut by the Frio and Nueces Rivers. The Frio River offers everything from whitewater rapids to tubing, swimming, and fishing. Other things to do in the area include horseback riding, birding, mountain biking, and scenic drives along the mountain roads and scenic back roads. There are many towns near Leakey to explore, and the big city of San Antonio is about an hour and half drive. Lodging in Leakey includes a lodge, cabins and vacation rental homes. Nearby attractions include Garner State Park, the Lost Maples State Natural Area, and Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area.
