Palacios
is located on the shores of Matagorda Bay along the Gulf Coast of Texas. The population of the town is approximately 5100. It's about 90 minutes southwest of Houston. Palacios is a quiet, laid-back town, frequented by those looking for a peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors. A popular legend says the area was named Tres Palacios (Three Palaces) several centuries ago by shipwrecked Spanish sailors who claimed they saw a vision of three palaces on the bay. However, local historians believe it was more likely named for José Félix Trespalacios, an early Mexican governor of Texas. Called "the best-kept secret of the Gulf Coast," Palacios has miles of scenic waterfront and is said to have more species of birds than anywhere else in the United States. It's a great place for those who enjoy fishing, with 3 lighted fishing piers in town that are open 24 hours per day. The Pavilion Pier is a t-head which is wheelchair accessible. Palacios also bills itself as "the shrimp capital of Texas" and is home to many restaurants that serve fresh, local seafood. Palacios is home to one of the most significant shipwrecks in U.S. history. The ship, "Belle," which belonged to French explorer Rene Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle sunk in 1686 and was excavated from September 1996 to April 1997. All of the artifacts, as well as the hull of the ship, were brought into the headquarters in Palacios before being taken to Texas A&M for conservation. A replica of the ship, which will be called La Petite Belle will soon become a part of a seven county LaSalle Odyssey. The City by the Sea in Palacios has a excellent video presentation detailing the excavation.

The Central Southeast coast of Texas has a humid subtropical climate according to the Koppen climate classification system. Prevailing winds from the south and southeast bring both heat from the deserts of Mexico and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Summer temperatures are very hot and the humidity drives the heat index even higher. Winters are temperate with January highs generally above 60 °F and lows near 50 °F. Snowfall is rare. Average annual rainfall is well over 40 inches a year. Hurricanes and tropical storms are an ever-present threat during the summer and fall season. Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula are generally at the greatest risk for hurricanes in this region.
