Port-Aransas
is a city on Mustang Island off the southeast coast of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 3,480. Port Aransas is the only established city on Mustang Island, which is one of the longest barrier islands along the Texas coast. It lies on the northern end of the island. Mustang Island is 18 miles long, stretching from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas. The island is oriented northeast to southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, and Corpus Christi Bay on the north and west. The southern end of Mustang Island connects by roadway to Padre Island. Port Aransas has an interesting history, including being a location for pirates in the early 19th century. Local lore says pirate treasure was even buried somewhere in the area. From around 1800 to the early 1820s, the Gulf Coast was a haunt of pirate ships searching for treasure. Mustang Island was used as a place to make camp, and according to legend, a place to hide treasure. Today, Port Aransas holds another kind of treasure - a favorite vacation destination of many, filled with sun and fun. Mustang Island State Park encompasses the entire southern end of the island, including five miles of beach. The beautiful beaches of the island makes it a popular spring break destination for college students. There are dozens of things to do; fish, swim, charter a boat, play in the sand, fly a kite on the beach, go kayaking, parasailing, kite surfing, jet skiing, and so much more. There's also nightly entertainment and live music and dozens of places to eat. Port Aransas is also very popular with birdwatchers and is billed as "America's Birdiest Small City," home to the Whooping Crane Festival.

The Southeast Gulf Coast of Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Tropical storms and hurricanes are common, and they strongly alter the climate of the region. This region is warm most of the year due to the currents of the Gulf of Mexico. Summers are very hot and humid. In winter, it can get cold if a strong front moves in, occasionally even causing snow. Most of the time, however, winters are very mild. Rain in the coastal region is more abundant than in the inland region. The wettest months of the year are April and May. Tornadoes can occur in this region, but less frequent than in other parts of the state.
