Alpine
is located in Brewster County in the west-central Big Bend region of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,905 residents. Alpine lies in a high valley (the highest city in the state,) with the Glass Mountains to the east, the Davis Mountains to the north, and the Del Norte Mountains to the south. This area had been a campsite area for cattlemen between 1878 and 1882. After that, a "tent city" was created for railroad workers and their families. The settlement was originally called Osborne, and by 1888, when the town's name changed to Alpine, the petition mentioned a hotel, three saloons, a rooming house, a livery stable, a butcher shop, a drugstore/post office and several houses. The town of Alpine was off to a good start. In the 1940s, the opening of Big Bend National Park brought even more growth to Alpine. Today, the city is home to the Sul Ross State University, a member of the Texas State University system. The town of Alpine also serves as a business center for ranching in the Big Bend area of Texas. Attractions include the restored Fort Davis Historic Site, which was a famous frontier outpost garrisoned from 1854 to 1891. The site has a museum, visitor's center and a restored officers' quarters. In addition, the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine houses local Spanish, Native American, and Mexican artifacts and historical displays.
