Marfa
is a small city located in the high desert country of West Texas. It's the county seat of Presidio County and is nestled between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. As of the 2010 census, the population of Marfa was 1,981. The city began in the early 1880s as a stop on the railroad, but today it's known for its' artisan shops and historical architecture. Marfa is built around a classic small town square, but with the addition of attractive modern art installments. Other attractions in Marfa include Building 98, which is a historic U.S. Army base bachelor officer quarters, officers club, and grand ballroom. The most unusual attraction in the town, however, are the Marfa Lights. According to the Handbook of Texas Online, at times the lights appear colored as they twinkle in the distance. They move about, split apart, melt together, disappear, and reappear." Presidio County residents have watched the lights for over a hundred years, with the first historical record of them dating to 1883. Presidio County has built a viewing station for the lights nine miles east of Marfa on U.S. Route 67. Each year, enthusiasts gather for the annual Marfa Lights Festival. Marfa first became known as a cultural arts center in 1971 when minimalist artist, Donald Judd moved here from New York City. In recent years, Marfa has attracted a new wave of artists with new art galleries and shops.
