Bastrop
is located in central Texas about 30 miles southeast of Austin. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,218 residents. The city of Bastrop is a vibrant community rich in history, a place that effectively blends old with new. The Lost Pines Forest overlooks the center of town, and is the center of the westernmost stand of the southern pine forest. The forest helped the founding of the town of Bastrop. As the only forest available in the area, the town began supplying the city of Austin with lumber as early as 1839. Later they supplied San Antonio, the whole western Texas frontier and even into Mexico. The city of Bastrop sits on the banks of the Colorado River and has a historic district with over 100 restored homes and other historic building, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants and bed and breakfasts. Other attractions include Bastrop State Park, established in 1938, and home to an 8.5-mile hiking trail, an 18-hope golf course, and a large swimming pool. Bastrop State Park is four miles west of Buescher State Park, and the two are connected by a scenic road. Other activities in the area include biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, tubing and more. Bastrop also boasts several art galleries and special events, such as the First Friday Art Walk.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid, with prevailing winds from the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, central Texas receives 33.6 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in the springtime. Tornadoes are a threat, especially in the springtime. Bright sunshine prevails, however, most of the time, with the area receiving nearly 2,650 hours of sun per year. The highest recorded temperature in central Texas was 112 F. on September 5, 2000. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
