Smithville
is a small city located in central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,817 residents. The city of Smithville bills itself as the "Heart of the Megalopolis," due to its' proximity between Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Bryon/College Station. Smithville is an old city, established in 1827, when Thomas Gazely settled there and opened a store. A community soon developed around the store and the name of Smithville was given to it in honor of another early resident, William Smith. Tourist attractions near Smithville include the James H. Long Railroad Museum and the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History. The Central Texas Museum of Automotive History is an automobile museum founded by Dick Burdick, a Texas businessman and car collector. The museum includes two different facilities, the original museum located in Rosanky, Texas which opened in 1980 and a second unit named Dicks Classic Garage located in San Marcos. The museum's address, however, is Smithville. The museum houses a collection of American and European cars from the 20th century. The European cars and American cars before 1929 are displayed in the original museum. There are 125 fully restored cars, including Stanley Steamers, Duesenbergs and Jaguars.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid, with prevailing winds from the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, central Texas receives 33.6 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in the springtime. Tornadoes are a threat, especially in the springtime. Bright sunshine prevails, however, most of the time, with the area receiving nearly 2,650 hours of sun per year. The highest recorded temperature in central Texas was 112 F. on September 5, 2000. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
