Hempstead
is located in Waller County in east-central Texas about 50 miles northwest of downtown Houston. The population is approximately 4,700 residents. The town is situated at the junctions of U.S. Highway 290, Texas State Highway 6 and Texas State Highway 159. The history of Hempstead is as follows (according to Wikipedia:) "on December 29, 1856 Dr. Richard Rodgers Peebles and James W. McDade organized the Hempstead Town Company to sell lots in the newly-established community of Hempstead, which was located at the projected terminus of Houston and Texas Central Railway. Peebles named Hempstead after Dr. G. S. B. Hempstead, Peebless brother in law. Peebles and Mary Ann Groce Peebles, his wife, contributed 2,000 acres of the estate of Jared E. Groce, Jr. for the community. On June 29, 1858 the Houston and Texas Central Railway was extended to Hempstead, causing the community to become a distribution center between the Gulf Coast and the interior of Texas." The town continued to grow, in part due to its' proximity to Houston. Hempstead has the distinction of being the home town of Lillie E. Drennan, who in 1929 became the first woman to obtain a commercial driver's license in the state of Texas. The city of Hempstead is home to several annual festivals; the Watermelon Festival, Octoberfest, Holiday Home Tour and the Festival of Lights. The latter includes a parade, horse and carriage rights, live entertainment, tree lighting, arts and crafts vendors and photos with Santa.

East-central Texas, where the upper Gulf Coast Region meets the Southern Lakes Region, the climate is mostly humid subtropical. Summers are hot and humid, and inters are mild and relatively dry. Snowfall is rare, but ice storms occur about once every two years or so. On average, east-central Texas receives 33 inches of rain per year, mostly in the spring and fall. Severe thunderstorms are also possible in the springtime. Tornadoes are a threat, especially in the springtime. Bright sunshine prevails most of the time. Summer highs exceed 100 degrees F. on an average of 18 days per year and exceed 90 degrees F. on 116 days per year.
