Lake-Texoma
is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States. It's located about five miles from Denison, Texas in the northeast part of the state. It sits on the border between Texas and Oklahoma. Part of it lies in the Oklahoma counties of Bryan, Marshall, Johnston and Love. The Texas part of the lake lies within Grayson and Cooke counties. Lake Texoma was formed by the creation of Denison Dam on the Red River and is situated at the confluence of the Red River and Washita River. The lake attracts nearly six million visitors per year. There are several small uninhabited islands on Lake Texoma, accessible only by water transportation. Lake Texoma is home to two state parks and 54 USACE managed parks, and two wildlife refuges. In addition, there are twelve marinas, 26 resorts, hundreds of campgrounds and numerous golf courses. Activities at the lake include swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, wind surfing, sailing, picnicking, hiking and more. It's become popular (and crowded) for college students during spring break and the Fourth of July, especially at an area known as "Fobb Bottom," on the Oklahoma side of the lake. Lake Texoma is also host to the Lakefest Regatta, widely considered to be the first inland charity regatta in the United States.

Southern Oklahoma has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Dry, sunny weather generally prevails throughout the state. Precipitation varies from an average of 15 inches annually in the panhandle to over 50 inches in the southeast. Snowfall averages 9 inches a year in southern Oklahoma, which is also one of the windiest areas of the United States. Lightening is common in the spring months, with the possibility of severe thunderstorms containing large hail and damaging winds. Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, but are most frequent during springtime. April, May and June represent the months of peak occurrence. May's average of 20 tornado observations per month is the greatest.
