Romayor
is a tiny community located in Liberty County in east-central Texas, near the Gulf Coast. The population is estimated at 96 residents. The village of Romayor is located at the junction of Farm to Market Roads 787 and 2610, about 63 miles northwest of Beaumont. The Texas State Historical Society says Romayor was called "River" prior to 1900 due to its' location on the Trinity River. The old community was the site of several Civil War sawmills. The introduction of rice as a major agricultural crop in the late nineteenth century led to tremendous change in the area. The post office, established in 1903, was dubbed Romayor, after the Joaquin F. de Rumayor grant, upon which it was located. The community also secured a station on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway at roughly the same time. With an estimated population of 100, Romayor became a voting precinct in 1929. Unfortunately, Romayor never achieved the growth that the town had once hoped to do. The town lies in a beautiful area, however, with the Trinity River flowing through the county. The highest point in Liberty County is Davis Hill, the roof of a salt dome in the northern part of the county. Nearby natural protected areas include the Big Thicket National Preserve and the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge.

Romayor Weather & Climate

|
The Northern Gulf Coast of Texas , near the Louisiana border, has a humid subtropical climate. This region is actually located within the Piney Woods Region of eastern Texas. It receives the most rainfall in the state - more than 48 inches annually. This is due to the warm gulf waters that carry humid air to the region, where it condenses and precipitates. The area is also prone to hurricanes, the most disastrous of which was the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 as well as Hurricane Ike in 2008. Winters are mild due to the warm gulf currents. Wintry precipitation is possible, but rare. For instance, it snowed in the area in December, 2004 - the first occurrence since 1989. This region is cited as one of the most polluted urban areas in the U.S.
