San-Marcos
is a beautiful city located in central Texas in the Austin metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 44,894. San Marcos is situated on Interstate 35 between Austin and San Antonio, along the banks of the San Marcos River. This area is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Northern Hemisphere. The city of San Marcos is home to Texas State University and the Aquarena Center. In 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau named it the fastest-growing city in the United States. Also in 2013, it was #9 on Business Insider's list of the "10 Most Exciting Cities in America." In 2010, it was listed on Business Week's survey of the "Best Places to Raise Your Kids." The scenic San Marcos River is a popular recreational spot for swimming, tubing, canoeing and fishing. Aquarena, in San Marcos, is an educational center dedicated to the preservation of the archeological and biological resources of Spring Lake, an artificial freshwater reservoir which contains several springs. It's managed on behalf of Texas State University by the Texas River Systems Institute. Aquarena Center was established in 1994 when Southwest Texas State University purchased land previously used as an amusement park, including Spring Lake. Today, glass-bottom boats rides are still available on Spring Lake, and last about a half-hour. The Aquarena Center has been designated as a critical habitat, subject to the Endangered Species Act, because the springs are home to several endangered species.

The south-central Hill Country of Texas has an arid climate, but sits on the edge of the humid subtropical climate zone. Summers are hot and winters are warm to cool. Spring and fall are comfortably warm. The area receives up to 48 inches of rain per year, with the wettest months being April and May. Widespread flooding is common. The central hill country receives about a dozen nights per year below freezing. Occasionally, there is sleet, freezing rain or snow. It's not uncommon for some winters to have no freezing precipitation at all. Tornadoes are possible, although not as common as in other areas of the state. July and August are the hottest months. The highest temperature recorded was 111 °F in 2000, and the lowest recorded temperature ever was 0 °F in January 1949.
