New-Braunfels
is a city located in Comal and Guadalupe Counties in south-central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,740 people. New Braunfels was settled in the 19th century by German pioneers and the town still has a sizable German Texan community today. The city of New Braunfels contains the historic district of Gruene, which at one time was a separate town on its' own. Most of Gruene is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gruene, which is pronounced like the color green, was founded in 1872 by the settler, Henry D. Gruene. His original Victorian mansion, which he built for his family, still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Texas Historic Landmark. Other historic buildings include Gruene Hall, a bar and dance hall built in the 1880s that became the social center for the town. It's the oldest dance hall in Texas and many singing legends have performed there over the years, including Willie Nelson and George Strait. The city of New Braunfels is host to an annual German-style festival each November called Wurstfest (which means "sausage festival.) The town also celebrates Wassailfest each December. New Braunfels also draws a fair amount of tourists who come to raft the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers. Other things to do include swimming, tubing, hiking and picnicking. New Braunfels is also the site of the water park.

The south-central Hill Country of Texas has an arid climate, but sits on the edge of the humid subtropical climate zone. Summers are hot and winters are warm to cool. Spring and fall are comfortably warm. The area receives up to 48 inches of rain per year, with the wettest months being April and May. Widespread flooding is common. The central hill country receives about a dozen nights per year below freezing. Occasionally, there is sleet, freezing rain or snow. It's not uncommon for some winters to have no freezing precipitation at all. Tornadoes are possible, although not as common as in other areas of the state. July and August are the hottest months. The highest temperature recorded was 111 °F in 2000, and the lowest recorded temperature ever was 0 °F in January 1949.
