Tehuacana
is a small town located in Limestone County in east-central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 283 residents. According to the Texas Handbook Online, Tehuacana lies at the intersection of State Highway 171 and Farm Road 638, six miles northwest of Mexia in northeastern Limestone County. The town was first established in 1847 and called Tewockony Springs for the Tawakoni Indians, who lived in the area until the late 1840s. When Tehuacana Academy opened in 1852, the community was known as Tehuacana Hills, though the post office continued to be called after the springs. After the Civil War, the name of the town and post office was changed to Tehuacana. In 1903 the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway completed its track between Cleburne and Mexia, passing through Tehuacana. The population of the town has gone through ups and downs, although never reaching more than a thousand residents. For all practical purposes, Tehuacana is a ghost town. The remains of the old abandoned college is there, and a quaint downtown area. The town has become home to several artists. There was another settlement by the name of Tehuacana located in Frio County that was virtually wiped out by a smallpox epidemic in the late 1800s.

Tehuacana Weather & Climate
Northern Texas , in the Plains Region, the climate is semi-arid and prone to drought. Annual rainfall is between 16 and 32 inches. During the summer, this area of state sees the most clear and sunny days. On most winter nights, temperatures fall below the freezing mark, or 32 °F. The wettest months of the year are April and May. Tornadoes are common, caused by the convergence of westerly and southerly prevailing winds during the late spring, making the region part of Tornado Alley. Poor land management, drought, and high wind speeds cause large dust storms. Improved land-management practices have improved dust storms somewhat in recent years. The panhandle region, farthest from the Gulf of Mexico, experiences colder winters than the other regions of Texas.
