Waco
is located in central Texas along the Brazos River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 124,805. In 1870, the Waco Suspension Bridge was completed across the Brazos River. As a result, the town of Waco built up around the bridge. It sits in the heart of Texas on the I-35 corridor between Austin and Dallas. Downtown Waco is small compared to other big cities in Texas, and it's very scenic with a Riverwalk that stretches for seven miles east and west along the banks of the Brazos River, from the Baylor campus to the Cameron Park Zoo. Waco offers many attractions, including the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Dr. Pepper Museum. The well-known soft drink was created in Waco, Texas by resident Charles Alderton in the 1880s. Waco is also home to the Waco Mammoth Site, a 100-plus acre stretch of wooded parkland along the Bosque River. The site provides a glimpse into the lives of Columbian mammoth bones discovered in Waco along the Bosque River. Other attractions in the city include Lake Waco, Hawaiian Falls Waterpark and the Mayborn Museum Complex. Waco is also home to many parks, including the 416-acre Cameron Park, next to downtown. It features scenic overlooks, playgrounds, and approximately 20 miles of nationally recognized trails that weave through the natural landscape. The park runs along towering limestone bluffs and overlooks the Brazos and Bosque rivers. The Cameron Park Zoo is inside the park on 52 acres next to the river. The zoo includes more than 1,700 animals, representing 300 species, along with a lake, ponds and waterfalls.

West-central Texas , halfway between Dallas and Austin, the climate is humid subtropical with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual rainfall is 36 inches and snow is 0 inches. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed during the year, although May is the wettest month. Sudden, severe thunderstorms are possible, especially in the spring. On average, west-central Texas receives 230 days of sunshine per year. July and August are the hottest months and January is the coolest month. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be moderate during summer and moderate during winter with an average difference of 24 degrees Fahrenheit. Tornadoes are always possible, especially in the springtime, as Texas lies within Tornado Alley.
