Lake-Lyndon-B-Johnson
(Lake LBJ) is a reservoir located in the heart of the Texas Hill County. It was created in 1950 by the formation of the Granite Shoals Dam on the Colorado River. Lake LBJ was originally called Lake Granite Shoals, and renamed in 1965 to honor former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Colorado River and Llano River meet in the northern part of the lake. The towns of Granite Shoals, Kingsland, Horseshoe Bay, Highland Haven and Sunrise Beach surround the lake, and the town of Marble Falls is also nearby. Lake LBJ is about 45 miles northwest of the city of Austin. Lake Lyndon B Johnson is well-known for its' excellent fishing of largemouth bass, white bass, catfish and crappie. The lake has a reputation of having the best white crappie population of any of the Texas lakes in the Highland Lakes chain. You can fish on your own, or go on a guided fishing excursion. Other activities at the lake include boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing, wake boarding, swimming, hiking and picnicking. There are several places around the lake to rent ski boats, pontoon boats, sail boats and jet skies. The area surrounding Lake Lyndon B Johnson also boasts golf courses, vineyards and wineries and hiking at Enchanted Rock and Longhorn Caverns. Most of the property around the lake is privately owned. Lodging options include hotels, resorts, cabins, camping, vacation homes and guest houses.

Central Texas basically has two seasons - summers that may last from April through October, and winters that start in November and usually lasts until March. When summer ends, it's too dry for autumn foliage, except in East Texas.
Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although most occurs in May and September in the form of thunderstorms. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time cause flash floods. Hail is reported around the Central Texas area an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Average yearly rainfall is near 32 inches. Average sunshine varies from about 50% in the winter to near 75% in the summer. Although tornadoes are rare, they are most often associated with dissipating tropical storms.
