Marble-Falls is a small city located in Burnet County in central Texas. It's about 45 miles northwest of Austin. As of the 2010 census, the population of Marble Falls was 6,077. The city is home to Lake Marble Falls, which is the smallest of the Highland Lakes, the largest chain of lakes in the state of Texas. The city of Marble Falls has an interesting history. It was founded in 1887 by Adam Rankin Johnson, a former Indian fighter and Confederate General, known as "Stovepipe" Johnson. He founded a college in the town, and a large factory near the falls. The town boasted a population of 1,800 within ten years. In 1917, Marble Falls made history by electing Ophelia Crosby Birdie Harwood, the nations first woman mayor (this was three years before women were allowed to vote.) In 1951, the Max Starcke Dam was completed, but the marble falls that had given the town its name were submerged under the new lake (named Lake Marble Falls.) During the last thirty years, Marble Falls has grown into the retail and entertainment center for the Highland Lakes area, and continues to attract tourists, retirees and new businesses. Activities at the lake include fishing and boating, hiking, swimming and picnicking. The town and lake are also both well-known for the annual Lake Marble Falls Lakefest drag boat races. The town of Marble Falls offers unique shops, good restaurants, a farmers market, and theater.

Marble Falls Weather & Climate

Central Texas basically has two seasons - summers that may last from April through October, and winters that start in November and usually lasts until March. When summer ends, it's too dry for autumn foliage, except in East Texas. Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although most occurs in May and September in the form of thunderstorms. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time cause flash floods. Hail is reported around the Central Texas area an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Average yearly rainfall is near 32 inches. Average sunshine varies from about 50% in the winter to near 75% in the summer. Although tornadoes are rare, they are most often associated with dissipating tropical storms.
