Mineola
is a small city in Wood County in northeast Texas. It sits at the junction of U.S. highways 69 and 80 about 80 miles east of Dallas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,515 residents. Mineola began as a railroad town. In 1873 the Texas and Pacific and the International-Great Northern raced to see which could get to Mineola first. The I-GN won, reaching the town fifteen minutes ahead of the Texas and Pacific. A city government was organized in 1873, a post office opened in 1875, and the town incorporated in 1877. In the 1880s, a fire destroyed nearly all of the town, but by 1890 the town had seven churches, several schools including a black free school, hotels, banks, and a population of 2,000. The town remains a major shipping center of the region. Mineola has several attractions, including a self-guided walking tour of the town, a historical museum, arts and theater, shopping and recreational opportunities. The town is near four lakes; Lake Holbrook is only five minutes away, Lake Fork is ten minutes, Lake Quitman is 15 minutes and Lake Hawkins is a twenty-minute drive. Lake Fork is known as one of the top fishing lakes in the world. This premier fishing lake consists of 27,690 acres and has 315 miles of shoreline. Species of fish in the lake include catfish, black and white crappie, sunfish, and bluegill.

Northeast Texas Piney Woods Region has a humid subtropical climate zone. This region receives more rainfall than any other region in the state - more than 60 inches annually. While coastal sections see the most cloudy days statewide, northern sections see the most sunny days. This area is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, generally in the springtime. The heat of summer is intensified by high humidity. During winter and spring along the immediate coast, temperatures are kept cool by relatively cool Gulf waters. In late winter and early spring, dense fog, called advection fog, can form when warm air moves over the cool shelf waters. The region is also vulnerable to hurricanes, although plenty of warning is generally given for these types of storms.
