Canton
is located in northeast Texas in Van Zandt County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,581 residents. Canton, Texas is most well-known for two reasons; it's home to the only water park in East Texas and the site of the largest and oldest flea market in the state. Splash Kingdom Waterpark is a family-friendly park that is located on Interstate 20, just west of the city of Canton. First Monday Trade Days is a monthly flea market that is actually held Thursday through Sunday preceding the first Monday of each month. Sometimes, up to 100,000 shoppers visit the fair in one weekend. First Monday Trade Days began in the 1850s as a horse auction. All stray horses in the region would be rounded up and brought into Canton the first Monday of each month and auctioned to the highest bidder. People came from all around for the auctions, which became known as First Monday Trades Day, or sometimes locals would call it "Horse Monday." As time passed, local farmers began also bringing their excess produce, grains and sugar cane syrup to sell. Today, there is space for 7,000 vendors in five locations around Canton for First Monday Trade Days. You'll find home furnishings, clothing, jewelry, candles, electronics, outdoor decor, plants, tools, antiques, collectables, quilts, arts and crafts and live animals and pets of all kinds. Canton also offers two shopping centers, dozens of restaurants, two golf courses, a museum, historical sites and a town square with unique shops. For outdoor recreation, there are two small city lakes. The larger lake has a boat ramp and a fishing pier. The smaller one has playgrounds and a hiking trail.

Northeast Texas Piney Woods Region has a humid subtropical climate zone. This region receives more rainfall than any other region in the state - more than 60 inches annually. While coastal sections see the most cloudy days statewide, northern sections see the most sunny days. This area is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, generally in the springtime. The heat of summer is intensified by high humidity. During winter and spring along the immediate coast, temperatures are kept cool by relatively cool Gulf waters. In late winter and early spring, dense fog, called advection fog, can form when warm air moves over the cool shelf waters. The region is also vulnerable to hurricanes, although plenty of warning is generally given for these types of storms.
