Gonzales is one of the most historic cities in Texas, located in the southeast part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,237 residents. It's situated at the confluence of the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers. Gonzales is an old town, one of the earliest Anglo-American settlements west of the Colorado River. It was settled in 1825 by Empresario Green DeWitt as the capital of his colony. The original settlement was located where Highway 90-A crosses Kerr Creek. It was abandoned, however, in 1826 after two American Indian attacks, and rebuilt nearby in 1827. Gonzales is known as the Lexington of Texas because it was the site of the first skirmish of the Texas Revolution. Here, the first shots rang out in the battle to win Texas' independence. Immediately after the Texas Revolution, the town was nearly deserted. It rebuilt during the 1840s, and the population slowly rose to over 4,000 by 1900. The town of Gonzales has some gorgeous old homes and self-guided Walking and Driving Tours are available of the historic downtown district. You can also follow historic Independence Trail, visit the Old Jail Museum, which houses the Visitor Information Center, and explore the Gonzales Pioneer Village Living History Center. Other things to do include scenic drives to view the Texas wildflowers, shop for antiques, and dine on delicious Texas barbecue. For outdoor recreation, there's nearby Palmetto State Park along the San Marcos River and Lake Wood Park along the Guadalupe River.

Gonzales Weather & Climate

Southeastern Texas has a climate that is humid subtropical. Summers are very hot and high humidity causes the heat index to rise even higher. Winds are often light in the summer and offer little relief from the heat. This region is often called "the most air-conditioned place on earth." Spring super cell thunderstorms sometimes bring tornadoes to the area, although it's not officially part of "Tornado Alley." Snowfall is rare in southeast Texas. The average high in January, which is the coldest month, is 63 degrees F. Average annual rainfall in this area is 50 inches. Storms dump large amounts of rain causing flash floods. Prevailing winds are from the south and southeast during most of the year, bringing heat from the deserts.
