Tow
is a small community located in Llano County in central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,249 residents. Residents pronounce the name of the town to rhyme with "cow" rather than "toe." Tow is about 60 miles northwest of Austin and sits on the western shore of Lake Buchanan. It's one of the oldest communities in the county and was named for two brothers, William and Wilson Tow, who settled in the area with their families in 1853. The town slowly grew and in the 1970s and 1980s became a retirement community. A tourist trade developed due to the lake, which is very important to the town's economy. Lake Buchanan was formed with the construction of Buchanan Dam in 1939. At the time, the dam was the longest multiple-arch dam in the United States. The lake was the first of what was to become known as the Texas Highland Lakes, and it's also the largest of the group of lakes. Lake Buchanan has 22,333 acres of surface water, 124 miles of shoreline and is five miles wide at the widest point. It's a very popular recreational lake for fishing, boating, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, jet-skiing and camping. There are RV parks, cabins for rent and vacation rental houses available around the lake. There's also several eateries, including a restaurant that specializes in catfish and another that is famous for their Texas BBQ. A great place for a vacation, a weekend get-away or for a day of leisure.

Central Texas basically has two seasons - summers that may last from April through October, and winters that start in November and usually lasts until March. When summer ends, it's too dry for autumn foliage, except in East Texas.
Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although most occurs in May and September in the form of thunderstorms. Large amounts of rain falling within short periods of time cause flash floods. Hail is reported around the Central Texas area an average of 31 days per year and tornadoes are reported on an average of 12 days per year. Average yearly rainfall is near 32 inches. Average sunshine varies from about 50% in the winter to near 75% in the summer. Although tornadoes are rare, they are most often associated with dissipating tropical storms.
