Athens
is a charming town located in Henderson County in east-central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,710 residents. One of east Texas' best-kept secrets, Athens is filled with natural beauty and enough attractions to keep the whole family satisfied, while being small enough to retain its' small southern town charm. The city of Athens was selected as one of the first "Certified Retirement Communities in Texas. It's also billed as the "Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World." It's just a short drive from the city of Dallas, so it's the perfect weekend getaway. Athens is also nationally recognized as the "Home of the Original Hamburger," yes - that's right - the American hamburger was born right here in the town of Athens, Texas! Attractions in the city include the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex, the Henderson County Historical Museum and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. Athens is also host to the Annual Texas Fiddlers Contest and Reunion, the oldest such event in the nation. Downtown Athens has eclectic shops, boutiques, art galleries, theater and many restaurants. It's also home to a Farmer's Market every Saturday, May through October.

Northeast Texas has a humid, subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Warm, dry winds from the north and west cause summer temperatures to often soar over 100 degrees F. This is one of the hottest regions of the United States during the summer. Winters are generally mild with clear, sunny skies. Sometimes, strong cold fronts in winter known as "Blue Northers" will pass through the region, causing nighttime lows to drop below 25 degrees F. It generally snows 1 or 2 days per year, with an average accumulation of 1.8 inches. However, daytime highs around 70 are not uncommon in winter. Spring weather is warm but can be volatile. Severe thunderstorms are common, along with lightening, heavy rain, hail and possible tornadoes. Northeast Texas is located in the heart of Tornado Alley.
