Bandera
is located in south-central Texas in Bandera County. This is the eastern part of the Edwards Plateau that is known as Texas Hill County. Other cities in the region include San Angelo, Austin, San Antonio and Del Rio. As of 2009, the estimated population of the town of Bandera was 1,216 residents. Bandera bills itself as the "Cowboy Capital of the World," and is an authentic Old West town where country-western music, community dances, and rodeos are still popular past times. Attractions in Bandera include the Frontier Times Museum, founded by J. Marvin Hunter and named for Hunters Frontier Times magazine. Two dude ranches are also located here; one of them a 725-acre working ranch that offers family-style meals, buffets and cook-outs. For outdoor recreation, Bandera is near Medina Lake, a reservoir in the Texas Hill County. Completed in 1913, Medina Lake is used for both recreational and irrigation purposes. The crescent-shaped reservoir is 18 miles long and three miles wide at its' widest point. The lake is contained by Medina Dam, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the time of its' construction, it was the largest concrete dam in the country and the fourth largest in the world.

The South-Central Hill Country has an arid climate, but sits on the edge of the humid subtropical climate zone. Summers are hot and winters are warm to cool. Spring and fall are comfortably warm. The area receives up to 48 inches of rain per year, with the wettest months being April and May. Widespread flooding is common. The central hill country receives about a dozen nights per year below freezing. Occasionally, there is sleet, freezing rain or snow. It's not uncommon for some winters to have no freezing precipitation at all. Tornadoes are possible, although not as common as in other areas of the state. July and August are the hottest months. The highest temperature recorded was 111 °F in 2000, and the lowest recorded temperature ever was 0 °F in January 1949.
