Boerne
is a city located in Kendall County in the south-central Texas Hill Country. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,471. Boerne is a city with a very interesting past, named after a Jewish-German author and publicist. In 1849, a group of German colonists camped on the north side of Cibolo Creek, about a mile west of the present day city. They were part of what was to become known as the Texas Hill Country Free Thinkers; a group of liberal, intellectual abolitionists who enjoyed speaking in Latin and "who believed in utopian ideals that guaranteed basic human rights to all." These "Free Thinkers" were passionate about science, literature, music and philosophy. Their experimental communities eventually failed due to lack of finances and other conflicts. However, in the late 1800s, Boerne became known as a health resort, due to its' reputation as a healthy, robust environment and was the site of a sanitarium for lung patients. Today. Boerne is a popular tourist destination. Attractions include Boerne Lake, a beautiful recreation spot for swimming, picnicking, non-motorized boating and fishing. Guadalupe State Park is also nearby and has four miles of river frontage for swimming, fishing, tubing, kayaking and canoeing. The park contains 1,938 acres and adjoins the 2,294-acre Honey Creek State Natural Area.

The South-Central Hill Country has an arid climate, but sits on the edge of the humid subtropical climate zone. Summers are hot and winters are warm to cool. Spring and fall are comfortably warm. The area receives up to 48 inches of rain per year, with the wettest months being April and May. Widespread flooding is common. The central hill country receives about a dozen nights per year below freezing. Occasionally, there is sleet, freezing rain or snow. It's not uncommon for some winters to have no freezing precipitation at all. Tornadoes are possible, although not as common as in other areas of the state. July and August are the hottest months. The highest temperature recorded was 111 °F in 2000, and the lowest recorded temperature ever was 0 °F in January 1949.
