Bulverde
is a small, thriving town located in Comal County in south-central Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,630 residents. The town's motto is "The Front Porch of the Texas Hill Country." Bulverde was settled in 1850 and first called Pieper Settlement. Many of the early residents were direct descendants of the German immigrants that had settled much of the Texas Hill Country. Much of the population of Bulverde were ranchers who owned huge ranches in the area, until the building of Interstate Highway 35 brought big changes to the town. This, along with the creation of Canyon Lake, brought many new residents, as well as visitors, to Bulverde. In the early 1970s, the first subdivisions were built in the town, and by the 2000s, Bulverde became a popular suburb of San Antonio. Canyon Lake, near Bulverde, is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River. It was completed in 1964 to provide flood control and water conservation for the communities downstream from the dam. The lake, in the heart of the scenic Texas Hill Country, also became a popular recreational destination. There are eight parks around the lake for camping, swimming, boating and picnicking. Comal County also provides several boat ramps for access to the lake, and bank fishing is available in all the park areas. Other activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding and limited archery hunting.

The south-central Hill Country of Texas has an arid climate, but sits on the edge of the humid subtropical climate zone. Summers are hot and winters are warm to cool. Spring and fall are comfortably warm. The area receives up to 48 inches of rain per year, with the wettest months being April and May. Widespread flooding is common. The central hill country receives about a dozen nights per year below freezing. Occasionally, there is sleet, freezing rain or snow. It's not uncommon for some winters to have no freezing precipitation at all. Tornadoes are possible, although not as common as in other areas of the state. July and August are the hottest months. The highest temperature recorded was 111 °F in 2000, and the lowest recorded temperature ever was 0 °F in January 1949.
